Why the Thickener in Your Grease Matters More Than You Think

A practical guide for plant engineers and maintenance teams In my previous article, I discussed the importance of getting the base oil viscosity right when selecting a grease. Base oil viscosity is critical — it determines whether the lubricant film is thick enough to separate the moving surfaces under operating conditions. But here is something many engineers overlook: the base oil is only one half of the story. The other half — the thickener — is what makes grease behave like grease. And choosing the wrong thickener can lead to failures that no amount of correct base oil viscosity will prevent.
